What is Pani Padhero?
Our initiative, 'Pani Padhero' aimed to address the challenges posed by COVID-19 and waterborne diseases in the Thapathali slum community of Kathmandu. Situated along the Bagmati river, this community accommodates residents in vulnerable conditions within squatter settlements. Recognized as a high-risk area for COVID-19, Thapathali slum has clusters of 50 to 200 families. The project focused on enhancing the community's capacity to combat waterborne diseases arising from poor sanitation and hygiene.
We were able to sensitize 100 families of Thapathali Slum Areas about growing communicable water borne diseases, proper WASH techniques, COVID-19 awareness/proper use of mask and sanitizers and the usage of hand washing stations to combat the rate of transmission.
After the session, we successfully installed two hand-washing stations to combat the rate of transmission of COVID-19 and other water borne diseases.
Project ‘Pani Padhero’ was successfully implemented with the support of Japan Water Forum and in collaboration with Thapathali Slum Association.
